Houston joins 75+ cities around the world in search of the world’s most
promising startups tackling complex, regulated challenges
Houston -- Station Houston announces Houston’s inaugural 1776 Challenge Cup startup competition, taking place September 7, 2017. Presented in partnership with 1776 and the investment firm Revolution, the global competition seeks to identify the world’s most promising startups, inviting them to share their vision on a global stage, engage with industry leaders, and win both cash and resource prizes.
Challenge Cups are taking place at leading startup hubs in over 75 international cities. For Houston, Station is currently accepting competition applications from startups across the region -- companies don’t have to be based in Houston to compete. The application deadline is Friday, August 18th. One finalist from the Houston event will be chosen to compete in the final 2017 Challenge Festival, a multi-day event in November taking place at 1776’s new campus in Brooklyn Navy Yard.
“The Challenge Cup is more than a pitch competition. We are forging partnerships between government officials, institutions, and entrepreneurs tackling complex challenges,” said Evan Burfield, Co-founder & CEO of 1776. “We are reinforcing the networks necessary for startups to solve meaningful problems on a global stage. By hosting the competition on 1776’s UNION network, we are uniting the fragmented global startup ecosystem in this mission.”
“Houston has the third largest concentration of Fortune 1000 companies in the country. We’re a global energy capital and home to the largest medical center in the world. Activating the local startup ecosystem is critical to ensure continued innovation and economic growth, and pitch competitions like this that bring entrepreneurs, mentors and investors together is a great way to do that,” said John Reale, Co-founder & CEO of Station Houston.
