Bechtel, a global leader in engineering, procurement, and construction, and Station Houston, Houston’s hub for technology and innovation, announced the launch of their new corporate partnership to connect local startups with industry experts to solve industry-wide safety challenges.
At the launch event last month, Station Houston proudly introduced its latest corporate partner into the greater Houston technology, innovation and entrepreneurship communities. Nearly 200 Station Houston members, entrepreneurs, corporate innovators, and other key members of the Houston startup and innovation community gathered to learn more about the partnership and to connect with Bechtel's innovation leadership team.
The program kicked off with a panel discussion - led by John “JR” Reale, co-founder & CEO of Station Houston and David Wilson, Bechtel’s Chief Innovation Officer - with several of Bechtel’s top innovators to give details on how local start-ups and entrepreneurs can help their company tackle the ongoing challenges of industrial safety.
“No singular organization can change, adjust and accommodate without the use of collaboration to bring in the best solutions. Through the co-development partnership with Station Houston, Bechtel will provide the space and the resources. You just need to bring your ideas,” David said.
Panelist Jared Anderson - Tanks Innovation Manager and participant in Bechtel’s internal innovation program - also stressed the importance of looking externally to crowdsource talent and technology driven solutions.
“It’s essential that we start looking around to other companies, other resources, other people that have experience in creating unique designs. We need to break down the myth of hyperscale mega projects and see them as a bunch of user based design challenges,” Jared added.
Chris Forbes, Innovation & Operations Manager and Laura Aiken, Work Process Strategist, went on to add that diversity of thought is the key to the innovation recipe, making Houston an ideal city to launch this type of partnership for Bechtel.
The program concluded with the announcement of several ongoing initiatives aimed towards creating greater connectivity between Bechtel and the greater Houston startup and innovation:
- One-on-one office hours with startups at Station and Bechtel leadership
- Creativity in Construction expert Ask Me Anything session for greater innovation community
- Corporate to Corporate Luncheon with current and potential Station corporate partners
- Diversity Roundtable focused on how to develop culture of inclusive innovation
“Corporate engagement is a critical pillar in our vision to build an entrepreneurship ecosystem in Houston. Through our partnership with industry leaders like Bechtel, talented entrepreneurs will get access to leading expertise as they create solutions for problem-sets that will impact our economy in years and decades to come,” said John Reale, Station Houston’s Co-founder and CEO.
