Houston, TX, March 7, 2018 - Station Houston, Houston’s hub for technology and innovation, and Houston Exponential (HX), formed to bolster Houston's innovation ecosystem, have partnered to launch #HOUSxSW: A week-long campaign bringing 22 of Houston’s most active influencers and innovators to SXSW to engage conference-goers and transform global perceptions of Houston’s creative community.
Organized and led by Grace Rodriguez, Co-founder/CXO of Station Houston, and Jon Nordby, Directory of Strategy at Houston Exponential, the activation runs March 9-15 in Austin, spanning the Interactive, Film, Music and Convergence tracks of the overall SXSW conference. In addition to establishing a #HOUSxSW oasis in the trendy South Congress area for Houstonians to meet with investors, clients and collaborators, they selected a dozen of Houston's most diverse and engaging personalities to attend SXSW as #HOUSxSW Ambassadors to evangelize Houston’s innovative communities and build relationships that last beyond the event. On Friday, March 9, Capital Factory invites Station and HX to host the Houston Megastop at their annual ATX Startup Crawl, bringing seven of Houston’s promising startups to showcase at this SXSW kick-off event that included over 90 tech companies and reached over 20,000 people in 2017.
“I’ve been attending SXSW since 2004 and have seen it boom and transform Austin over the years. Many of us in Houston’s creative community wondered why we didn’t have a stronger presence at this big event ‘in our backyard,’ so in 2009 a few of us started an annual showcase of Houston film, music and tech in Austin during that week. We learned that what made the biggest impact on people outside of Houston was meeting the people who were creating and innovating within Houston: It seemed all were surprised by the hidden talent of our city! Now, with Station Houston and Houston Exponential joining organizations like the Houston Film Commission to increase our city’s presence at SXSW, the prospect of more people and groups with broader resources coming together to advocate for our innovative arts, media, and digital communities is incredibly exciting. It gives us the ability to bring Houston startups like HTX Labs, Liongard, VastBiome, Syzygy Plasmonics, Unvired, Fresh Tech Solutionz and Penrose Technologies — and creative companies like YAWP Records and GoodSpero — to SXSW to elevate awareness of Houston to the thousands of people who attend the conference from around the world,” said Rodriguez.
Nordby adds: “This is a unique time for Houston: We find ourselves at the intersection of major industries like Energy, Healthcare, Aerospace and Manufacturing that are primed and ready to be disrupted and are now welcoming that disruption by partnering with startups at a increasing rate. At Houston Exponential, we are working to build a cohesive ecosystem where Corporations, Startups, Investors, Academia and the Government are all actively contributing to and building the framework needed to prepare for the influx of Third Wave companies that will look to build in places where they can access the hard assets of the industrial complex. SXSW give us a great platform to showcase some of our founders and let those across the world know that Houston is ready for disruption.”
